MOU Signed with Wonju and Halla University for Cooperative Development of New & Renewable Energy

On Sep. 25, 2009, KOPEC signed an MOU on cooperation for the development of new and renewable energy and energy-saving projects with Wonju, Halla University and other organizations.

President An Seung-kyoo of KOPEC, Mayor Kim Gi-yeol of Wonju, President Lee Jung-moo of Halla University, the chairman of Wonju Council, the representatives of tenant venture companies and the representatives of various environmental organizations based in Wonju participated in both the signing ceremony and the ceremony for the opening of Wonju Energy Technology Center.

The parties to the agreement will promote new and renewable energy projects, including the model complex for new and renewable energy and the creation of a low-carbon green village, as well as energy-saving projects such as the formation of a model village for smart grid and LED lighting.

The inflow of people into Wonju has increased and the city has been expanded via the continuous implementation of urban development policies. Furthermore, Halla University is fostering professional manpower and conducting the related research activities as an exclusive research institute for the establishment of a new and renewable energy cluster and the operation of a verification center for eco-friendly composite power generation. Since March this year, the three organizations have discussed the joint implementation of new and renewable energy and energy-saving projects to respond to climate change, as well as such issues as the need to secure the independence of national energy sources and the development of the local economy. As part of the project, Wonju and Halla University established the Wonju Energy Technology Center on the campus of Halla University.

In a congratulatory speech for the completion of the center held before the signing of the MOU, President An Seung-kyoo said, “With the technology and experience we have accumulated in the construction of power plants both at home and abroad over more than 30 years, KOPEC will be able to make Wonju the No. 1 Green City in Korea in both name and reality by cooperating with Wonju and Halla University on the research and development of new and renewable energy sources.
