The first fuel loading ceremony for Shin-Hanul Unit 1 was held on the site of the Shin-Hanul Nuclear Reactor Facility on July 14.
The ceremony was attended by President Kim Sung-arm and President Chung Jae-hoon of the Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power Company as well as officials from affiliated companies.
After the completion of its design and construction, the 1400 MW-capacity Shin-Hanul No. 1 reactor received its operating license from the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission on July 9 after going through rigorous reviews by the regulatory authorities.
As Korea’s 27th nuclear power plant, Shin-Hanul Unit 1 is the same APR 1400-type nuclear reactor design that was exported to the UAE. The Shin-Kori Nuclear Power Plant Units 3 & 4, having obtained design accreditation from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and which is in operation today, are also based on the APR1400 design.
In particular, Shin-Hanul Unit 1 can be said to be Korea's first reactor to achieve technological independence because some of the core facilities like reactor coolant pump (RCP) and man-machine interface system (MMIS) were domestically developed. After the first fuel loading, Shin-Hanul No. 1 will go through an 8-month trial operation before going into commercial operation in March 2022.
