On June 25th, KEPCO E&C concluded a memorandum of understanding with Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials(KIMM) pertaining to bilateral cooperation on development of the offshore floating power plant.

As the offshore floating power plant is equipped with power generating facilities on a barge, it can freely move to wherever electricity is needed. Therefore, it has a strong point of flexibly supplying power to islands in which power grid is hard to be installed or areas whose power demand is surging dramatically.

The plant is drawing immense attention as it is expected to address socail conflict resulting from consturction of onshore power transmission system and contribute to prompt establishment of power infrastructure in North Korea in the case of unification of Korea.

Signing the MOU, KEPCO E&C will be in charge of system engineering for generating units and inland connection while KIMM will be responsible for designing floating structure and main power generation facilities. In this regard, synergy effect is expected by integrating the core technologies of the two partners.

Also, participants had a discussion on ‘ways to develop Korean type of offshore nuclear power plant’ in MOU signing ceremony. The two partners will cooperate on developing Korean type of nuclear power system as well.
