The general completion ceremony for generators 1~8 of Hadong Thermal Power Plant, for which KOPEC provided design and technological support services, was held on July 2nd at the Hadong Thermal Power Plant Headquarters of Korea Southern Power Co., Ltd. (KOSPO: President Nam Ho-gi). Park Chi-seon, Chief of Plant Engineering & Construction Div., Kim Jeong-gwan, Chief of the Office of Energy & Resources at the Ministry of Knowledge & Economy, congressman Yeo Sang-kyoo, Ahn Sang-geun, Vice Governor for Political Affairs of Gyeongsangnam-do Province and 300 local residents participated in the ceremony.

The construction of the generators for Hadong Thermal Power Plant was a huge project which took 15 years to complete, with total project costs amounting to KRW 4.2 trillion and 7.5 million man-days. The huge coal-fired thermal power plant has power generation facilities of 4,000MW (500MW×8 generators) and high-tech IT technologies such as automatic moving and stoppage and automatic load dispatching operation systems.

The entire site of Hadong Thermal Power Plant covers approximately 3,770,000㎡. Following the start of construction in 1993, generators 1 and 2 were completed in 1997, 3 and 4 in 1999, and 5 and 6 in 2001. Generator no. 7 began commercial operation in December 2008 and generator no. 8 in May 2009.

For the construction of generators 7 and 8, the Ireland Turnkey method was adopted for the first time in a large-capacity coal-fired thermal power plant in Korea. The project contributed to the improvement of Korean construction companies’ international competitiveness, as all the construction materials were made using Korean technologies, and helped to invigorate the local economy with total construction costs of KRW 1,117.6 billion and some 2 million man-days per year.
