The completion ceremony for Yonghung Thermal Power Plant,Units. 3 and 4 for which KOPEC provided comprehensive design services, was held on June 4th at the Yonghung Thermal Power Plant in Yeongheung-myeon, Ongjin-gun, Incheon-si.

The ceremony was attended by Jang Do-soo, the president of KOSEP - a client of the power plant; various congressmen and government officials; the chief of the government agency with jurisdiction over the facilities; An Seung-kyoo, the president of KOPEC; Park Chi-seon, KOPEC’s chief of Plant E&C Div.; executives of the companies which supplied the boilers, including Doosan Heavy Industries; Hitachi of Japan which provided the turbine generators; and Hyundai Engineering & Construction. At the ceremony, General Manager, Youk Dong-chun was presented with a Presidential Award while General Manager, Go Jae-mun received an award from the Minister of Knowledge Economy in recognition of KOPEC’s contribution to the comprehensive design.

Yonghung Thermal Power Plant, the largest 870,000kw level coal-fired power plant in Korea, is operated using the supercritical pressure generation method. The project, which began in May 2004, took five years of construction work to complete, for a total construction cost of KRW 1,579.6 billion. The generators are equipped with highly efficient, state-of-the-art environmental facilities, and are even better than generators 1 and 2, which were recognized as the best equipment for the prevention of air pollution among all the environmental facilities in Korea. Notably, the discharge of air pollutants has been reduced remarkably 15ppm of sulfur oxides (safety standards: 25ppm), 10ppm of nitrogen oxides (safety standards: 15ppm), and 0.55mg/㎥ of fine particles (safety standards: 5mg/㎥). In addition, foreign currency equivalent to KRW 1,130 billion can be saved annually as the generators use soft coal, whose price is only 25% that of LNG, as fuel for the power plant.

With the operation of generators 1~4, Yonghung Thermal Power Plant will have the capacity to generate 3340MW of electric power in total, and will provide approximately 13% of the electricity required in the metropolitan area during the summer period, when demand reaches its peak. On the basis of the experience it accumulated during the design of the largest coal-fired thermal power plant in Korea, KOPEC is currently working flat out on the design of a 1,000,000kw power plant.
