Korea Power Engineering Company, Inc. (KOPEC) signed a contract with the NCSR “Demokritos” for “Engineering - Scientific consulting services for the replacement of the primary cooling system of the Research Nuclear Reactor of NCSR 'Demokritos'” on May 14. KOPEC has been selected as the Contractor as the result of international tendering with INVAP which is one of the strongest player in research reactor market. KOPEC was able to win the Project with its technically outstanding infrastructure and competent engineers included in its technical proposal. KOPEC is to provide reactor core analyses and construction supervision as well as engineering services for replacing primary cooling system of the research reactor built in 1960 according to the Contract.

Even though the project is smaller in scale than other research reactor engineering projects, it will serve as an opportunity for Korea to build a reputation for technological competitiveness in the European nuclear power market.

The success will have positive effects on the other international tender for Netherlands’ research reactor EPC project in which KOPEC is participating as engineering firm of a consortium with KAERI, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, and Daewoo Engineering & Construction.

It’s expected that about 50 research reactors will be replaced with new ones in the next 15 years, and the market value is estimated at 15 trillion won. KOPEC plans to continue to explore new business opportunities in overseas research reactor market through close cooperation with other related organizations in Korea. On the other hand, KOPEC is actively participating in exporting commercial nuclear power plants to make Korean nuclear industries be one of the state-of-the art countries.
