Export Research Nuclear Reactor Design Improvement Technology to Greece

KOPEC was selected as the Interim Contractor for the ‘Greece GRR-1 Research and Design Improvement Service” ordered by the Greece NCSR Demorkitos on January 22.
Since April 2008 KOPEC had undergone a 10 month evaluation period. As a result, KOPEC was selected as the Interim Contractor edging out well-known power engineering companies in the world and securing no. 1 in an evaluation for technology as well as for price. KOPEC will provide engineering and consulting services in replacing the primary cooling system of the 5 MG research reactor, and in improving design and control system.
The leading companies for research reactor design are Argentina’s INVAP and AREVA of France. The former is currently the world’s no. 1 company for projects of research reactor building and upgrade. KOPEC edging out these rivals in a technology evaluation demonstrates the high level of Korea’s design technology.
Kwon, Oh-Cheol, President and CEO of KOPEC said that, “KOPEC, the leading nuclear engineering contractor in Korea, succeeded in securing the deal edging out well-known design companies in an international open and competitive tender after 14 years of South Korea’s independence of research reactor design. The deal is significant in that the level of Korea’s research reactor design has been recognized worldwide.”
The new business development in overseas market is also recognized as a model case successfully coordinated between the government, research field, and industrial field. The project development is based on the information provided by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute during the earlier stages, and the close cooperation provided by the local diplomatic missions of the Korean government.
KOPEC also succeed in concluding a contract with Westinghouse of the U.S. to participate in Westinghouse’s AP1000 project last March. As a result, KOPEC has re-export its research reactor design to the U.S. Securing this project has provided a bridgehead to take aggressive measures to advance into the European market.
