KEPCO E&C signed an A/E services contract for the Taean IGCC Pilot Plant with Korea Westernpower Co., Ltd. on April 22, 2011.

This project is led by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and Korea Institute of Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning to develop technologies that can be applied to the Korean 300MW IGCC Pilot Plant. In 2010, Korean power generation companies, equipment manufactures and research institutes took part in the first phase of the project and completed it successfully. In line with the phase, Korea Westernpower invited bidders for the second phase after the prequalifying process and awarded it to KEPCO E&C. KEPCO E&C’s relentless efforts to develop IGCC technologies played a pivotal role in winning the bid.

IGCC(Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle) technology is drawing a global attention as an alternative to the RPS(Renewable Portfolio Standard) in Korea and one of the technologies representing the next generation coal-fired power plants since it produces electricity in an efficient and eco-friendly manner by burning coal gas which is regarded as clean as natural gas.

The pilot plant is scheduled to be completed in 2015 during which KEPCO E&C will take responsibility for detail design and owner support including connection between plants.

KEPCO E&C expects that the bid success will be an valuable opportunity to create an environment where it gets upper hands in SNG(Substitute Natural Gas) projects and IGCC projects of KEPCO as well as upcoming ones at home and abroad.
