KOPEC attended the groundbreaking ceremony for the Dangjin Small Hydro Power Station on April 15 (Tue) at the construction site near the cooling seawater conduits within the Dangjin Thermal Power Plant located in Gyoro-ri, Seongmun-myeon, Dangjin-gun, Chungcheongnam-do.

The ceremony was attended by more than 50 people who are involved in the project, including the CEO of Korea East-West Power, CEO of Sambu Construction, CEO of Byucksan Engineering, employees of other related companies, Song In-hoe, CEO of KOPEC, and project managers for the Dangjin Fossil Power Plant Units 7& 8.

The Dangjin Small Hydro Power Station will generate electricity by using a 5.7m waterfall created by the cooling seawater with an annual power generation of 25,773MWh. A total of 19.3 billion won will be invested in the construction of the hydro power station, which is scheduled for completion in December 2009. When considering the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism), it’s expected to generate a profit of about 7.3 billion won for the next 21 years.

The project requires thorough safety and quality management since the construction will mostly take place on water. KOPEC will play a very important role in the project because the company is in charge of providing a majority of support services to the client such as the survey of the island, construction, and test management. The significance of the project lies in the fact that small hydro power is considered one of the sources of recycled and alternative energy.
