KEPCO E&C, together with the Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), is pursuing a new industry branch through the convergence between the world's best power plant design technology and the marine shipbuilding industry.

KEPCO E&C and KRISO held on April 12, the "Technology Conference for the Creation of a New Industry through the Convergence of Plant Technology and Marine Shipbuilding Industry" and inspected a) the status of offshore nuclear power technology and offshore plant technology, b) the direction of offshore structure design and offshore plant technology and more in a presentation style and discussed plans for future technological cooperation.

That day, the focus of discussion was on the “Floating offshore plant (complex power plant) project." It is hoped that the floating complex cycle power plant project – wherein nuclear and thermoelectric generators are built on a large barge to provide power where it is needed – will be able to create a market in the rural islands outside the mainland where electricity is not supplied.

In addition, the fact that the project is free from possible problems that may arise from constructing a plant on land (securing the site, NIMBY syndrome, etc.) makes the prospect of success even brighter.

Most notably, the floating complex power plant is the ideal power supply method in the event of sudden unification of Korea. Other possible uses include airports, offshore hotels, bridges, plants, etc. Both parties agreed during discussions on the technological cooperation plans that “the development of a Korean offshore nuclear power system based on the small modular reactor will be the new business model for the marine shipbuilding and nuclear industries,” and that “the floating structure is economically outstanding considering the construction, transport, design, dismantling, etc., compared to stationary types, it does not destroy the environment, and it is capable of utilizing the massive marine space.”

President & CEO Koo-woun Park and Director Sang-hyun Suh of KRISO said that the floating complex power plant can overcome the limits of power plants bound by land and can create new and varied power generation markets such as thermoelectric and nuclear power.
