Overview

South Korea has implemented a policy to diversify power generation fuel, focusing on expanding the supply of bituminous coal and natural gas-fired power plants since the early 1970s to secure and stabilize energy supply and demand.
Accordingly, KEPCO E&C has developed a coal-fired power plant design that is suitable for domestic requirements/ conditions, equipped with excellent technical and economic feasibility.

We have secured world-class power plant design technology, ranging from the supercritical 500 MW-class Korean standard coal-fired power plants, the 800 MW-class upgraded capacity coal-fired power plant to the 1000 MW-class large-capacity next-generation coal-fired power plants. We also completed the demonstration plant design of the 300 MW-class integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) power plant to usher in the era of high-efficiency and clean coal-fired power technology commercialization.Moreover, we have completed the comprehensive design of more than 60 cogeneration and combined cycle power plants.

Besides this, KEPCO E&C is focused on the important goal of developing designs for next-generation thermal power plants, such as 700℃ ultra-supercritical high-efficiency and clean thermal power plants, in preparation of international efforts to reduce GHG emissions pursuant to the Paris Agreement.

Thermal power plant design performance highlights

  • 1 500 MW class coal-fired power plants: 36 units
  • 2 800 MW class coal-fired power plants: 4 units
  • 3 1000 MW class coal-fired power plants: 13 units
  • 4 Coal-fired power circulating fluidized bed: 5 units
  • 5 Coal-fired cogeneration and combined cycle power plants: 60 units

Main tasks

KEPCO E&C provides technical services throughout the entire life cycle of thermal power plants, such as omprehensive design for thermal power plant construction and fuel conversion, performance improvement, and life extension of operating power plants.

Feasibility study, support for purchasing equipment (main & auxiliary equipment), and environmental impact assessment;

Review and approval of supplier-submitted documents, field surveys & project management support;

Design standardization service, technical support for construction & commissioning, and preparatory construction design;

Support for quality assurance & control, basic & detailed designs for main construction, and generation of construction completion documents
