On December 22, 2010, the CDM (Clean Development Mechanism) Executive Board of the UNFCCC issued CERs (Certified Emission Reductions) for the Younggwang Solar Power and Kori Wind Power Project of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co. (KHNP) in which KEPCO E&C provided a consulting service to KHNP.

The project was registered in the CDM registry in April 2009 and monitored for about a year from April 7, 2009 to March 31, 2010. During the period, it reduced 2,294 tones of CO2 emissions, which is the equivalent of 3,640MWh electricity generated by eco-friendly energy sources such as 3MW Younggwang Solar Power and 0.75MW Kori Wind Power. The amount of emission reductions can be immediately sold to advanced countries in the form of CERs. When Korea becomes an Annex 1 country to the UNFCCC in 2013 under which countries have the greenhouse gas emissions reduction obligations, the reduced amounted can be considered as its own reductions achieved. KEPCO E&C will receive 10% of CERs as an incentive by KHNP.

With the participation in the project, KEPCO E&C not only has had track record in the CDM registration and issuance of CERs, but also has solidified its position in the CDM consulting. Now, KEPCO E&C is carrying out the Chyeongpyeong Hydro Power Extension Project which is scheduled to be completed registration in the CDM registry of the UNFCCC on February 2011.
