KEPCO E&C has won a 230-billion-won (174M€) super-large-scale project to supply Construction Management-as-Agent (CMA) services for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) in Cadarache, France, beating out seven other consortiums.

KEPCO E&C organized the MOMENTUM Consortium together with AMEC in the UK  and ASSYSTEM in France and won the CMA services contract from the ITER International Organization. (Date of contract: June 27, 2016 in French local time)

The MOMENTUM Consortium, after completing a preparation period of 6 months to understand the overall business, will carry out the assembly, installation and management of the experimental reactor along with overall coordination work until the completion of the ITER construction work.

The ITER project is a super-large international joint research project in which seven countries, including the South Korea, USA, Russia, the EU, Japan, China, and India, will construct a super-large thermonuclear experimental reactor jointly  in Cadarache, France in order to substantiate the possibility of mass producing  energy through nuclear fusion.

In order to trace and secure nuclear fusion technology within the shortest possible time, Korea has been participating in the ITER project since June 2003.

To ensure effective construction management and supervision of the ITER project, which is considered the world’s largest international joint research project in the area of science and technology, participation by an engineering company with abundant experience in performing super-large projects, including nuclear power plant engineering, is deemed essential.

KEPCO E&C has built up its technological prowess and confidence by winning diverse service projects, including radioactive waste management engineering and cable engineering projects, from the ITER international body on the basis of its world-best nuclear power and thermal power plant engineering capabilities.

The winning of the project will greatly help promote the company’s practical engineering work experience and excellent technology in the world market. The company is also expected to secure various technologies necessary for the construction of a nuclear fusion power generation reactor in the future.

KEPCO E&C President Park Goo-won said,“By winning this contract for CMA services, Korea’s engineering capabilities in the energy sector have been globally recognized once again following the export of a nuclear plant to the UAE. KEPCO E&C will do its utmost to ensure that the ITER project is a resounding success.”

KEPCO E&C has been making continuous efforts to enter the nuclear fusion sector since 2007 when the ITER project was initiated. As a result, it succeeded in participating in the ITER project in 2008, starting with the provision of design support services for the installation of ITER international body electrical equipment.

Thereafter, KEPCO E&C won various projects worth 60 billion won, such as radioative waste management engineering, cable engineering, measurement control engineering, etc.
