The APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400) reactor has received the final Design Certification (DC) from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) on August 26 (local time).

Along with KEPCO Nuclear Fuel and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction, KEPCO E&C has been participating in the project led by KHNP and KEPCO to attain the DC from US NRC for APR1400.

KEPCO E&C played the key role for reactor system design, overall design, and preparation necessary documentation, which met all strict US NRC requirements.

APR1400 received the Standard Design Approval (SDA) in September last year and then was listed in the Appendix of the US Code of Federal Regulation through a legislation process.

It means that APR1400 nuclear power plants can be constructed and operated in the United States. The certification is effective for 15 years and can be extended for up to 15 years.

The acquisition of DC is significant in that APR1400 was the first non-US reactor model to receive the certification in the United States, where the regulatory regulation is the strictest.

Moreover, the fact that the NRC deliberation was completed in the shortest period in history objectively proves the safety of the APR1400 and provides the opportunity to introduce KEPCO E&C’s nuclear plant design capability to the world.

Following the acquisition of the European Utility Requirements (EUR) certificate in October 2017, KEPCO E&C considers the acquisition of the NRC DC as the platform to further improve the possibility of entering the global nuclear power plant market and plans to fulfill its role as the technological center of the nuclear power industry.
