President & CEO Park Koo-woun of KEPCO E&C and President Preston Swafford of CANDU Energy of Canada discussed ways of collaborating in the nuclear power business on April 24 at the Gimcheon.

The discussion was part of the agenda for President Preston Swafford’s visit to Korea. Both companies discussed collaboration to find engineering project opportunities in nuclear power plants currently operating in Korea and abroad and collaborating in the nuclear power plant business.

As a subsidiary company of the SNC-Lavalin Group, CANDU Energy of Canada undertakes the engineering, procurement, and maintenance of nuclear reactors.

Korea introduced CANDU-type nuclear plants to its Wolsong units 1~4 and has safely operated them, which are pressurized heavy water reactors developed in Canada. They are being operated today with a clean safety record. KEPCO E&C gained experience in carrying out architect engineering and nuclear steam supply system design when it designed Wolsong Units 1~4 through a joint partnership.

“KEPCO E&C has accumulated extensive experience in the engineering of light water nuclear reactors and heavy water nuclear reactors. As such, we hope our two companies can collaborate overseas on not only new nuclear plant projects but also on engineering projects for nuclear plants currently in operation and follow-up maintenance,” CEO Park said.

He also expressed hope that this meeting could lead to increased exchanges in the areas of nuclear technology and business opportunity, and that the friendly cooperative relationship could be extended for the sake of developing joint businesses in the future.
