Groundbreaking Ceremony at Shin-Ulchin Units 1&2

On May 4, 2012, the groundbreaking ceremony of Shin Ulchin Units 1&2 was held at the construction site with the presence of some 700 people including President Lee Myung-bak, Knowledge Economy Minister Hong Seok Woo, key local government leaders and residents. President & CEO Seung-kyoo AN, Senior Executive Vice President of the Nuclear Division Sun Koo KANG, Senior Executive Vice President of the NSSS Division Jun Seok YANG and some project representatives attended the ceremony on behalf of KEPCO E&C.  

President Lee Myung-bak said in his congratulatory speech that Korea achieved nuclear technology self-reliance by developing core materials that used to be reliant on other countries, standing as the world’s top five nuclear majors enough to compete with global powers in the market. President Lee also put the most emphasis on a sense of liability and integrity of the nuclear industry people that ensures life and property of the Koreans although efficiency of Korea-made nuclear power plants is highest in the world with world-class safety. 

President Lee proclaimed his strong commitment to promote nuclear power as the locomotive for low-carbon green growth of Korea by opening the Nuclear Safety Commission status briefing and seminars about the nuclear cluster along the eastern coast on an annual basis by the time of the groundbreaking ceremony of Shin-Ulchin Units 1&2.  

APR1400 Shin-Ulchin Units 1&2 are featured by the Man-Machine Interface System (MMIS) and the Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP), nuclear key equipment and component that used to be manufactured by imported technology. KEPCO E&C attaches great significance to the first-ever application of the homegrown technology.
