On April 30, 2012, KEPCO E&C signed a 18.3 million Euro (some 28 billion won) cable engineering services (CESS) contract with the ITER(International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor) International Organization.

President & CEO Seung-kyoo AN and ITER Director-General Osamu Motojima attended the contract signing ceremony at the Plaza in the afternoon. Under the CESS contract, KEPCO E&C will undertake the cable design and engineering services of the 500MWt ITER that is under construction in the southern part of France in the five years to come. It is expected that a huge amount of cables will take for the construction, equivalent to that of four units of nuclear power plant.

The ongoing ITER project is an international joint R&D project among seven countries (Korea, USA, EU, Japan, China, Russia and India) with the goal of commercialization of thermonuclear energy.

Since 2008 even before this award, KEPCO E&C has been strenously involved in the ITER project in terms of support of engineering electrical installations and optimization of the Type B radioactive waste. This contract award holds a particular significance because KEPCO E&C won the competitive bidding against globally renowned companies such as Alstom, Cegelec, consortium of Empresario Agrupados (EA) & TATA.

The ITER technical evaluators visited the bidders for this project to review and verify their work experience, performance, technology and human resources for more than one year. The ITER delegates visited Korea as part of the activity last year, walking down the construction site of one nuclear power plant where we performed A/E. It is known that the delegates were then deeply impressed with the successful application of design outputs into construction. It is considered that advanced technology, rich know-how and excellent human resources of KEPCO E&C based on nuclear power plant design experiences of in and outside Korea merited the ITER evaluation on all fronts.

ITER KODA Director-General Ki Jung JUNG said that KEPCO E&C contributed to Korea by garnering international confidence for Korea’s technology through a pool of exceptional engineers sent to the ITER IO and relentless efforts for the engineering services. ITER KODA is solely responsible for the ITER projects of Korea under the National Fusion Research Institute (NFRI).

CEO AN added that he was very pleased to join the largest-ever international joint R&D project and we were commited to developing future energy sources and accumulating thermonuclear technology of Korea by performing the engineering service successfully.
