Shin-Kori 1 launched commercial operation for the 21st in Korea. On February 28 this year, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology notified KEPCO E&C of the fact that Shin-Kori 1 passed the pre-operation tests and we at KEPCO E&C reported launching of commercial operation at Shin-Kori 1 to the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

Shin-Kori 1 is the first-ever improved type of the nuclear power plant (NPP) with the sweeping design changes implemented compared with the standard NPPs. The construction of the unit started in January 2005, the operation license was awarded in May 2010. The function test, and the power ascension test to measure nuclear safety and reliability were completed in December 2010. Some test results of commissioning at Shin-Kori 1 are expected to contribute to enhance design quality of the units to come, broadening and deepening our experience in construction and test operation of nuclear power plants.

Meanwhile, the hot functional test (HFT) for Shin-Kori 2 is under way ahead of fuel loading. The unit is scheduled to load fuel by June 2011 followed by multiple function tests and the power ascension test targeting completion by December 2011.

Nuclear power is one of the greatest green energy sources against the backdrop of the rising oil prices. The commercial operation that generates one-million kw will mean to us a secure supply of electricity and a significant amount of cost saving at a time when oil prices are soaring around the world.
