Declaration Ceremony for Upgrading Design Reliability and Promoting Safety Awareness at the Nuclear Division

On January 14, some 210 Nuclear Division staff members attended the Declaration Ceremony for Upgrading Design Reliability and Promoting Safety Awareness in the Art Hall (2F, KEPCO E&C human resources development center building). The division-wide Ceremony was held in an effort to review a series of the recent errors in nuclear design and commissioning. The occasion served as an opportunity to upgrade reliability in nuclear power plant design and to spread awareness on nuclear safety through analysis of the incident causes and prevention measures.   

Ahead of the presentation session and the declaration, a video message from Jong-Shin Kim, CEO of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd (KHNP) was played on the screen. CEO Kim in his message emphasized the importance of nuclear safety and design reliability; significance of close collaboration with other industry players. Then, Executive Senior Vice President Sun Koo Kang of the Nuclear Division gave a presentation titled “Failure Study” in terms of the characteristics and perspectives from leaders on failure. He also suggested several ways to turn failure into success in the corporate culture, highlighting the importance of a sense of safety of leaders. The core business strategy for this year was presented by the business group leaders, the Executive Director of the research institute and the engineering group leaders. Their plan focuses on technology advancement and improvement of design reliability.      

Senior Vice President Heung-Kyu Park from the construction business group elaborated the recent design errors and inappropriate actions to them in his presentation on “We are Quality-focused Professionals.” His solutions to overcome the problem included strengthening management skills of design changes or improvement, building a culture of sharing design errors and establishing the nuclear safety culture. Meanwhile, Senior Vice President and UAE Project Manager Kye Kwang Jee proposed action plans for proactive customer satisfaction in his presentation that well demonstrated his UAE project experience of the past year.  

In closing of the Ceremony, Senior Vice President Jik Lae Jo and General Manager Cheol Woo Lee read the resolution on behalf of all the attending staff members and recommitted themselves to higher design reliability and safer nuclear safety culture. 

All the executives and employees of the Nuclear Division will maintain their proactive attitude going forward in practicing their goals so that they can regain their trust from customers.
