Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) awarded Korea Power Engineering Co. (KOPEC) a contract on March 28, 2006 to provide initial project preparation services for its new Shin-Ulchin Nuclear Power Plant Units 1 & 2.

The project is a part of the 2nd phase of the Korean government’s long-term generation plan.  For the contract, KOPEC will carry out various tasks such as site and plant arrangement optimization study, plant design options to minimize discharge water temperature rise, environmental impact evaluation of discharge water temperatures during a 14 month period, starting April 2006 and ending May 2007.

Although it’s a relatively small project in terms of its contract value, it imply a significant meaning to KOPEC since this is the first step of project mobilization for power plant construction. According to KHNP’s plan, KOPEC is required to submit a proposal describine design work to be provided for the new project by end of this year, and sign the actual contract sometime around May 2007 following submission of a proposal and contract negotiations.
