KEPCO E&C signed on October 22 an MOU with Korea Western Power and Doosan Fuel Cell for joint projects of fuel cells using biogas (clean hydrogen) for daily living.

The signing ceremony was attended by representatives from both companies, including Kim Dong-gyu, director of KEPCO E&C’s Energy Division, Kim Sung-gyun, head of Korea Western Power’s Growth Business Division, and Lee Seung-jun, head of Doosan Fuel Cell’s Sales Division.

The three companies signing the MOU have decided to carry out eco-friendly, high-efficiency energy projects involving directly injecting pure biogas from unused biogas with impurities removed into hydrogen fuel cells. KEPCO E&C will supply pre-processing equipment and design and construct the supplementary equipment for pure biofuel cell, Korea Western Power will manage the projects, and Doosan Fuel Cell will provide the main equipment.

Biogas is generated when organic waste (wastewater, food, livestock manure, etc.) decays and decomposes in an enclosure, and 60% of it is composed of methane (CH4). Currently, 80% of the biogas produced annually is used for power generation and self-use, with the remaining 20% left unused.

KEPCO E&C expects the signing of the MOU to lead to a new business model that can secure an eco-friendly, high-efficiency energy source by proactively responding to the government's hydrogen economy policy and Clean Hydrogen Portfolio Standards (CHPS) and directly utilizing unused biogas.
