On January 19, KEPCO E&C signed a business agreement with Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) to develop technology and business for offshore substation system (OSS) facilities.

The agreement ceremony held at the DSME’s Okpo Shipyard was attended by officials from both companies, including Kim Dong-gyu, head of the New Energy Business Division of KEPCO E&C, and Woo Jae-hyuk, the head of the Technology Division of DSME.

OSS is a key offshore wind power system that raises the voltage power generated by an offshore wind farm to match the grid voltage and delivers it to land. Offshore wind power is one of the next-generation clean energy sources recently in the spotlight, along with liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Korean government has already announced its goal of becoming the world's top five offshore wind power generating countries by 2030 as part of the Green New Deal.

For the joint research, KEPCO E&C will be responsible for the design and construction of the power sector, including power generation and transmission and substation, while DSME will be responsible for the comprehensive design of the offshore facility comprehensive design and production technology, which are its core capability. The two companies plan to expand their joint research of OSS to overseas business in the future and jointly develop OSS for not only on land or near seas but also distant and deep seas.

“We expect this business agreement to lead to the entry to the domestic and overseas OSS markets through the close combination of core competencies of both companies. KEPCO E&C plans to take the lead in creating future growth engines and growing green energy business by expanding our business areas, such as the development of offshore wind power substation facilities based on its core competency, the excellent design know-how,” Kim Dong-gyu, Director of Energy Division at KEPCO E&C, said.
