On October 13, KEPCO E&C signed an MOU with Hyundai Engineering & Steel Industries (HESI) and K-Bets to cooperate on the joint development of the Yaksu offshore wind power demonstration project.

The Yaksu offshore wind power demonstration project concerns the 4.3MW-capacity wind farm that the Jeonnam Development Corporation plans to construct in the offshore area of Baeksu-eup, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do.

The MOU signing ceremony, held at HESI’s head office in Jongro-gu, Seoul, was attended by Kim Dong-gyu, director of the Energy Division at KEPCO E&C, Lee Seok-jang, CEO of HESI, Ji Gwang-seup, CEO of K-Bets, and executives from each company.

HESI is a steel structure and heavy equipment company that mainly produces steel frames for bridge, steel frame, and offshore/industrial equipment businesses. It has accumulated considerable experience in a number of offshore wind power projects related to this project, such as manufacturing and installing basic jackets and installing generators.

K-Bets, headquartered in Mokpo City, Jeonnam, is a local underwater service company that holds a number of patents related to the construction of offshore structures.

“All the parties are ready to cooperate closely and make the most of each other’s capabilities to achieve optimal results for the offshore wind power business,” declared Kim Dong-gyu, director of the Energy Division at KEPCO E&C.

The Yaksu offshore wind power demonstration project is being carried out to achieve the objective of the government’s Renewable Energy 3020 and Green New Deal Initiatives and to establish the basis for expanding the distribution of new and renewable energy. It is expected to contribute greatly to improving the technological competitiveness of the offshore power business and expanding the wind power market.
