KEPCO E&C, SME Seonghwa win contract for ITER equipment supply

KEPCO E&C has won a contract jointly with Seonghwa Industrial Co., a local small-and medium-sized enterprise, to design pipe support for the ITER body in France. The 2 billion-won project, which is linked to the efforts of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy to invigorate the local nuclear power industry, was promoted as part of the KEPCO E&C’s program to support SMEs involved in ITER.

The project deals with the designing, manufacturing and supplying of pipe support made of carbon steel and stainless steel that can endure various conditions including the high electromagnetic field required in ITER.

Key technology in the project is maintaining purity of steel and electromagneticity resistance, in which Seonghwa Industrial has built up strength by participating in construction work for local nuclear power plants.

KEPCO E&C is an engineering firm specializing in designing of nuclear power plants and other electricity generation stations. As a public enterprise that put emphasis on contribution to the society, KEPCO E&C is trying to locate SMEs in the power generation equipment business, share with them technologies and help them win licenses and certificates so that they can advance into the international market for nuclear fusion energy, which is getting attention as the energy of the future.

Mr. Jin Tae-un, head of the Nuclear Division who supervises the support program for ITER-related SME exporters, said, “The contract proves the technological competitiveness developed by the local nuclear power industry over the past 50 years and it will help the industry find a breakthrough for the local nuclear power industry at a time of energy transformation.”
