On November 21, KEPCO E&C acquired the European Utility Requirements (EUR) certificate for the standard design of the EU-APR, a nuclear reactor designed for the export to Europe.

The certificate was issued to the consortium consisting of KEPCO E&C, KHNP, KEPCO NF, and Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.

The consortium applied for the certificate to the EUR organization in December 2011 and underwent a pre-assessment for two years. After meeting all the requirements, the general assessment began in November 2015, and the final certificate was issued after 24 months, the shortest record ever achieved in EUR general assessment history.

The EUR assessment evaluates the safety and economic requirements for the new nuclear power plants to be built in Europe. The EUR organization, composed of fourteen nuclear power plant operators in twelve European countries, issues the EUR which standardizes the design of new nuclear power plants and defines the technical standard for procurement. It also assesses whether the standard design complies with the requirements or not.

The EUR-assessment requires compliance with more than 4,500 requirements in 20 areas. As such, the consortium submitted 620 technical documents, answered more than 800 inquiries, and held numerous Coordination Group (CG) meetings to pass the assessment.

The EUR certificate for the EU-APR places the consortium in a considerably better position in the European market because the European utilities currently intends to construct new nuclear power plants and also participated in the assessment of the standard design of the EU-APR. The certificate has also laid the foundations for the consortium to export the nuclear power plants to the countries that use the EUR requirements as the standard bidding requirement for the construction of nuclear power plants.
