KEPCO E&C successfully conducted the performance test of In-Vessel control element drive mechanism on November 21.

The test was attended by about thirty people including Lee Gwang-Won, the head of KEPCO E&C’s NSSS Division, and representatives from WOOJIN INC. and ILJIN Power Co., Ltd.

The In-Vessel control element drive mechanism is a key device that can completely eliminate control rod ejection accidents at small and medium-sized nuclear power plants where a single rod worth is high due to boron-free operation. Only a few countries have the relevant technology, and it is difficult to obtain the key element technology because it is protected as a strategic technology.

KEPCO E&C is developing the In-Vessel control element drive mechanism as part of a national project that is scheduled for completion by May 2018. The above mentioned test was the first performance test of the high-temperature, high-pressure environment inside a reactor to be successfully carried out in Korea.

The successful completion of the test means that KEPCO E&C has secured the key technical competitive edge and thus will be more active in the small and medium-sized nuclear power plant market, which is expected to grow at a relatively fast rate.

KEPCO E&C plans to focus on enhancing technical maturity by conducting a durability test corresponding to the lifespan of a nuclear power plant.
