KEPCO E&C conducted technology briefing sessions in three European nations, namely Hungary, Slovenia, and Ukraine, as part of a “Project to establish the basis for the export of plant monitoring systems for existing nuclear power plants overseas.”

The project is to be implemented with a view to laying the foundations for export of the main computing system based on the Company’s track record in projects to supply main computing systems to existing nuclear power plants in Korea. During the briefing sessions, KEPCO E&C explained the functions and characteristics of the main computing system (ROAMS), and introduced its experience in projects for improving facilities at currently operating nuclear power plants.

The PAKS is a nuclear power plant in Hungary with four VVER440 reactors in operation. An I&C Package Modernization (2013-2018) project is under way for the plant, and the Company has decided to invite the chief implementer of the project to Korea and to hold additional consultations. The NEK is a plant in Slovenia with just one WH-type nuclear reactor, which is the same type as those used at Kori Nuclear Power Plant 2 in Korea, in operation. A plan has been fixed to invest 3 to 4 million euros over the next ten years to improve its facilities, and KEPCO E&C is expected to be able to apply its achievements in projects to improve WH-type nuclear power plant facilities to this project.

EnergoAtom, a Ukrainian power company, is operating 13 VVER 1000 nuclear reactors and two VVER440 reactors. It is also constructing two new nuclear reactors, and is drawing up a plan to construct nuclear power plants with a combined capacity of about 6GW. KEPCO E&C visited EnergoAtom’s headquarters in Kiev and explained its experience in projects it had previously undertaken to improve monitoring and control facilities, including main computing systems. As EnergoAtom had shown keen interest in the APR1400, KEPCO E&C decided to hold an expanded technology seminar. Additionally, the Company visited RADIY, a specialized maker of nuclear power plant monitoring and control facilities based in Kirovograd, toured FPGA-based product and production facilities, and decided to devise strategies for implementing joint projects combining KEPCO E&C's design capability with RADIY’s production capacity.

Through its overseas technology briefing sessions, KEPCO E&C has introduced the situation of nuclear power plants currently in operation and new nuclear power plants under construction in Korea, and KEPCO E&C’s technologyl capacity. It has also familiarized itself with the current situations in the countries concerned. By learning about the characteristics of nuclear plant facilities and business plans and stepping up its efforts, the Company has thus confirmed its potential to develop new overseas projects in the nuclear reactor assembly field.
