Joint Overseas Environmental Marketing with Korea Midland Power

Lim Sung-choon, president of KOPEC, and Chung Jang-sup, president of Korea Midland Power, signed a two MOUs for the initiation of the ‘500 MW KEPAR(Korea Electric Power Absorption Reactor) Scale-up Project’ and joint export of KEPAR on February 23, 2006.

The Korean Standard Flue Gas Desulfurization(KEPAR FGD) Sscale-up Project is for Korea Midland Power’s Poryong Thermal Power Plant Units 1 and 2. KOPEC is to complete the project by November 2008 with the support of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy and participation of Korea Midland Power and Korea Electric Power Research Institute.

According to the MOUs, KOPEC will contribute to national export while also demonstrating ’s technological competitiveness and project management capabilities by introducing the KEPAR FGD to the Chinese and other foreign markets.

At the signing ceremony, presidents of KEPCO and Korea Midland Power said, “This KEPAR FGD Scale-up Project is absolutely necessary to ensure the sustainable growth of the power industry. We will try our best to develop international standard technologies so that we can jointly tap into the global environmental market."

*Definition: KEPAR - Korea Electric Power Absorption Reactor is a commercial equipment jointly developed by Korea Power Engineering Company and Korea Electric Power Research Institute currently being used by the Yeongdong Thermal Power Plant Units 1 &2, Seocheon Thermal Power Plant Units 1 & 2, Pyeongtaek Thermal Power Plant Unit 1, and NamJeju Units 3 & 4. Thanks to the successful commercialization of KEPAR following the turnkey projects, no longer has to rely on foreign technologies and pay royalties to foreign companies.
