KOPEC was awarded a Korean Nuclear Safety Mark from the Ministry of Science and Technology for SAREX™, a computer software for probabilistic safety assessment developed by Integrated Safety Assessment Group of KOPEC. With this, KOPEC’s capabilities in safety engineering and software development for nuclear power plant are once again recognized, and more SAREX™ units are likely to be exported to foreign countries.

Equipped with FORTE, the world’s fastest fault tree quantification engine also developed by KOPEC, SAREX™ is a software program designed to conduct probabilistic safety assessments on industrial facilities including nuclear power plants. PSA specialists from the U.S. made favorable comments on SAREX™ in the PSA quality assessment conducted in January this year. In the assessment results, two of the five top graded  (S-graded) items were singled out by SAREX™.

SAREXTM is used in the probabilistic safety assessments of all nuclear power plants in Korea, and will continue to be used as deterministic regulation of nuclear power plants are being changed to risk-informed regulation using PSA results. SAREX™ is currently being used in Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, Nuclear Environment Technology Institute, Korea Electric Power Research Institute, and all nuclear power plants in Korea. KOPEC periodically offers SAREX™ users an intensive training course of SAREX™ and RIMS (Risk Monitoring System).

SAREX™ is currently being tested for performance at two U.S.-based laboratories and one Canada-based laboratory. SAREX™ is registered in Korea, Japan, and U.S. for trademark protection. With the Nuclear Safety Mark given by the Ministry of Science and Technology, KOPEC gained a strong sales force for SAREX™ in foreign markets.
