Proton Accelerator is a device to generate high energy by accelerating protons to a fast speed. Protons and neutrons are the basic particles that constitute the atomic nucleus. When energy is supplied to the inside of the accelerator, protons can speed up to 260,000km/sec, which is close to the speed of light (300,000km/sec). If the proton at this high speed crashes into other substance, the basic structure of the substance changes. This characteristic can be applied to various fields including nanotechnology, Biological Engineering Technology, Space Technology, and Medical Technology.
Korea, as a part of 21st Century Frontier Research & Development Project, developed 100MeV, 20mA proton linear accelerator in 2012 for the 3rd time in the world following the U.S.A, and Japan. KEPCO E&C has performed basic design project to construct proton accelerator research center, such as establishing design standards for the Phase I facilities including injector building to accommodate proton linear accelerator, layout of subsidiary facilities inside the project site, basic design of each building, system design of utility facilities, and finalization of accelerator and beam facilities Interface Design.
