KEPCO E&C signed the Agreement for a Domestic Consortium to participate in the OECD-ATLAS (Advanced Thermal-hydraulic Test Loop for Accident Simulation) 2nd Joint International Research at the International Nuclear Training and Education Center (INTEC) in Daejeon on November 22.

The purpose of the Agreement is to strengthen cooperation between KEPCO E&C and other organizations such as the Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety (KINS), and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) to promote the successful execution of the OECD-ATLAS 2nd Project, which is a joint international research project to improve the safety of nuclear power plants.

Korea is the managing country of the project, in which nineteen organizations - including this consortium - from twelve countries are participating.

Following on from the 1st phase research conducted from April 2014 to March 2017, the 2nd phase research will include integral thermal-hydraulic effect tests and assessments of the safety analysis focused on various Design Extension Conditions (DECs) for three years from October 2017.

KEPCO E&C will be responsible for gathering and evaluating the test data, assessing the safety analysis codes, including the SPACE code, and upgrading the model to improve the safety of nuclear power plants.

“This international joint research project will not only enhance the safety of nuclear power plants in Korea, but will also serve as an opportunity to internationally prove that the SPACE code developed jointly by KEPCO E&C and other domestic agencies has the capability of safety analysis,” said Lee Gwang-Won, the head of KEPCO E&C’s NSSS Division, in his words of encouragement.
