On October 18, KEPCO E&C decided to strengthen mutual collaboration with the German company Preussen Elektra GmbH for the successful decommissioning of Kori Nuclear Power Plant Unit 1.

The decision was made possible as the CEO of Preussen Elektra GmbH, Mr. Guido Knott, paid a visit to KEPCO E&C, with KEPCO E&C’s acting CEO Jo Jik-Lae and other top executives in attendance.

Preussen Elektra GmbH owns a total of seventeen nuclear power plants, including thirteen in Germany and four in Sweden, as well as being responsible for the operation and decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Germany. Notably, it has successfully decommissioned the nuclear power plants in Wurgassen and Stade, and is now planning to completely decommission three permanently stopped nuclear power plants.

Since 2014, KEPCO E&C and Preussen Elektra GmbH have maintained a successful relationship based on mutual collaboration on △the transfer of German nuclear power plant decommissioning technologies to Korea, △joint research and development of nuclear power plant decommissioning technologies, and △the joint execution of nuclear power plant decommissioning projects.

From now on, both companies will transfer their nuclear power plant decommissioning technologies and conduct joint research on Germany’s nuclear power plant decommissioning costs and energy optimization in a relationship set to continue with the execution of overseas nuclear power plant decommissioning projects, including Kori Unit 1 and R&D on nuclear power generation.

KEPCO E&C’s acting CEO Jo Jik-Lae said, “To cope with the decommissioning of domestic nuclear power plants, we are making great efforts to develop our own technologies as well as to transfer technologies from abroad,” adding, “Starting with the current collaboration, we will reinforce our mutual collaborative relationship for the successful decommissioning of Kori Unit 1 and seek opportunities for exploring overseas nuclear power plant decommissioning markets such as Germany and the USA.”
