- Ten New Growth Businesses Set to be Launched, Including Nuclear Decommissioning and Renewable EPC -

A workshop on launching new growth businesses was held on January 16.

The workshop was organized to discuss the increasing difficulty in the energy plant market that includes nuclear power plants and thermal power.

The agenda of the workshop was to seek ways of diversifying the business portfolio in response to such difficult market conditions. The workshop was attended by approximately 50 people, including CEO Koo-woun Park, senior management, department heads, and team leaders.

In 2015, KEPCO E&C established a company vision for the future as described by “Vision 2025, A Mid- to Long-Term Management Strategy.” This plan outlines the goal of increasing up to 25% the share of revenues coming from nuclear power plant post-management, renewable energies, and other future growth engines.

This workshop served as an occasion for concretizing how Vision 2025 should be put into practice. Discussions were held on a wide range of areas, from listing of future growth areas, mid- to long-term technology development, and business development strategy to setup of the system of human resources and organization.

Duk-ho Kim, head of technology strategy planning for new growth businesses, proposed 10 new growth businesses including the following : nuclear reactor decommissioning; high-level radioactive waste disposal; small and medium nuclear reactors; floating power plants; supercritical CO2 power generation; Integrated Gasfication Combined Cycle(IGCC), Carbon Capture & Storage(CCS); environment facility improvement; renewable EPC; and integrated/fusion renewable.

These new growth businesses would be grouped into 5 major areas : nuclear power plant post-management; small and medium nuclear reactor(SMR); fusion technology; clean coal fired power plant; and renewable energy.

These new growth businesses were selected based on 3 considerations. The first consideration was whether the new business is compatible with the purpose of KEPCO E&C’s founding and direction of KEPCO E&C’s future strategy. Second was whether the new business can be realized by extending the current technology or KEPCO E&C’s current business domain. The third and final consideration was the marketability of the business at the time of its launch. The selected new businesses will become the core tasks in KEPCO E&C’s pursuit of new businesses.

Detailed implementation steps for increasing the effectiveness of new business launches, such as hiring and training of technical personnel, expansion of the dedicated organization, allocation of budgets, and assignment of performance targets, are going to be planned.

KEPCO E&C will put maximum effort into winning orders for its new growth businesses and meeting its sales targets. It will augment its staff and organization and complete the early deployment of systems so that new growth businesses can be successfully established.
