For the first time in Korea, KEPCO E&C has concluded a research contract with German company PreussenElektra GmbH, PEL (formerly known as E.ON GmbH) on nuclear decommissioning.

KEPCO E&C is going to carry out research on “System Change for Optimizing Energy and Cost during Nuclear Decommissioning”; the analysis will focus especially on estimating cost according to the addition or modification of the necessary equipment and system at the stage of preparing for nuclear decommissioning.

This contract is a product of the cooperation between the two companies, which has been established since 2014 concerning the “transfer of technology and business know-how of Germany's nuclear decommissioning,” “international joint research and development of decommissioning technology,” and “participation of KEPCO E&C in the nuclear decommissioning business in Germany.”

E.ON, the largest power company in Germany, was separated into PEL and UNIPER on July 1, 2016. PEL deals with renewable energy, transmission, and distribution, which includes operating and decommissioning nuclear power plants in Germany.

PEL has completed the decommissioning of Würgassen and Stade nuclear power plants, and it plans to decommission three units of nuclear plants that have been stopped permanently.

KEPCO E&C expects this contract to serve as an opportunity to enter the overseas nuclear decommissioning markets in Germany and USA and plans to develop flawless techniques and accumulate business experience for domestic nuclear decommissioning in the future.
