KOPEC signed a design contract with Daewoo Engineering and Construction company for the AFAM VI Combined Cycle Power Plant in on January 19, 2006.

KOPEC awarded basic and detail design contract from Daewoo Engineering & Construction, which was appointed as the EPC contractor by SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Company). KOPEC has been designing the power plant systems after receiving the ATP on November 21, 2005. KOPEC and Daewoo had jointly participated in the project bidding, and KOPEC played a decisive role in wining the project by being recognized for having superior technology than competitors.

AFAM VI Combined Cycle Power Plant consists of three 150MW gas turbines, three HRSGs, and one 200MW steam turbine for the 650MW combined cycle power plant. This plant will apply an air-cooled condenser and an air-insulated switchyard on a steel frame. The GT commercial operation will start in March 2007, while the combined cycle operation is to commence as early as March 2008.

KOPEC is participating in the project as an engineering company of the main EPC contractor Daewoo Engineering & Construction to provide basic and detail designs and necessary activities as well as to support equipment purchasing and site supervision. The project is highly significant to KOPEC since it’s the company’s first time in Africa carrying out the whole design process for an overseas combined cycle power plant project. It’s also a great opportunity for KOPEC to further increase the level of its design capabilities and improve the quality of its design management methods and procedures since it is to follow the international design standards as well and management procedures throughout the project.

Based on the contract, KOPEC will have a higher chance of jointly participating with Daewoo Engineering & Construction in the upcoming new and rehabilitative power plant and construction projects of Nigeria SPDC (Shell Petroleum Development Company). Not only that, it was a wonderful opportunity for KOPEC to demonstrate its capabilities in designing combined cycle power systems
